Generic Name : Carbimazole
Pronunciation : car·bim·a·zole
Trade Name(s) : Antithyrox, Neomercarole and Thyrozole.
Why it is prescribed: It inhibits oxidation of iodide, inhibits iodination of tyrosine residue and inhibits the coupling of iodotyrosine residues.
When it is to be taken: Initial dose: 15-45mg daily in divided doses for 2-4 weeks.
How it should be taken: The medication comes in the form 5, 10 & 20mgs.
Special Instruction : Inform your doctor if you have sore throat and fever during the therapy. Tracheal obstruction.
Side Effects : Agrarolocytosis, transient leucopenia, arthralgia, nausea, fever, loss of hair and hepatic damage.
Other Precautions : Use with caution in case of pregnancy and old age. Contraindicated in case of lactation. Interacts with warfarin in hyperthyroid state.
